In order to achieve very high spectral efficiency over wireless channels, it is known that we needmultiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver ends. We consider the coherent case where the receiverhas perfect knowledge of all the channel coefficients. It has been shown [31] that the main code designcriterion in this scenario is the rank criterion: the rank of the difference of two distinct codewords hasto be maximal. If this property is satisfied, the codebook is said to be fully diverse. Once the differencehas full rank, the product of its singular values is nonzero, and is defining the coding gain. Maximizingthe coding gain is the second design criterion. Extensive work has been done on designing Space-Time
codes that are fully diverse.
